no, justin timberlake - i wont bring sexy back

this weekend, hot 97 had a justin timberlake weekend where they were able to win a pair of tickets to his concert.

so a couple of things:
a. no, justin. im not going to bring sexy back, because frankly, im not quite sure when it left.
b. hot 97 is a hip-hop station and i really dont care if he's your favorite "white boy" he doesnt belong on your airwaves
c. any production by timbaland doesnt make you hip-hop/rap. will it make you an instant hit and club banger, probably.

with all those things said, i am in no way telling people to stop listening to justin timberlake or that we shouldnt be diverse in our musical taste. he is very catchy, and for a member (if not a former member) of a boy band, he has done well for himself. a flourishing solo career minus bald britney. great.

however, what i am saying is, for a hip-hop station that influential and so well known, they are choosing to play "sexy back" (which along with his other songs have been played out on every popular music station), instead of embracing new and better hip-hop/rap music. honestly, how can someone like MIMZ, (whose song is very catchy and addictive) become a chart topping song, with lyrics like, "this is why im hot/ this is why im hot/ you aint cause you not"

um, sorry, but i think thats a circular argument. i just dont know how hot you can be MIMZ. i guess im just not as hot as you are.

once again, im going to point out that a radio station has its priorities. it has to take into account its listenership, fanbase, politics, etc, etc. however, im putting it out there, that new york has been the hub of hip-hop/rap since the beginning. we are the beginning. it started in the bronx and grew out of the fire of the housing projects, but we also have understand that this music has grown and contorted into a shape that no one could've forseen. with that, new aspects of hip-hop/rap need to be embraced. southern styles are completely in the shadows despite having a few popular artists from that area. the brits have also been overlooked, except for maybe dizzy rascal, who to some is still too outlandish.

im not trying to be onery in any way, and im just as guilty as the next. i know the words to the MIMZ song, but i also know the sampled track in the very beginning of jay-z's "show me what you got." i listen to hot 97 and power 105 because i have faith that these radio stations will provide me with good music and entertainment. i go to sleep with the stereo on hot 97 and if thats not devotion, i dont know what is. i just think the inner politics and higher uppers of management at these radio stations need to rethink how they want to go about playing music and capturing the public.

so, let's bring hip-hop back.
